Online Learning and MOOCS: The Next Generation


Yesterday was the last day of International Exhibition & Conference on Higher Education #IECHE14 round five and titled "Innovation in Higher Education" held in Riyadh International Convention & Exhibition Centre sponsored by Saudi Armco, Sabic and HUAWEI

It was meaningful informative and amazing experience added to my knowledge by attending a well done organised conference that host about 440 universities from worldwide and about 75 workshops by leading Experts from the Kingdom and the World...only six workshops interested me and all of them were valuable for me as postgraduate student in EELU and as an e-learning thirsty:


  • Open e-courses of Mass Enrollment at King Khaled University - MOOC
  • The experience of King Abdulaziz University in Electronic Tests
  • e-Learning at King Faisal University - Facts & Numbers
  • Saudi Digital Library Gateway
  • Photography Art, Digital Photo Editing & Instagram in Higher Education - King Saud University 
  • Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.


All of my post here will not pass over summarizing session two of day 1: Tuesday, 15 April 2014  15:20 - 16:50 pm. 


Conference designed to proceed four panels and program sessions one of the most related to e-Learning interested is the the titled "Online Learning and MOOCS: The Next Generation?" moderator by JAMIL SALMI as (Talk Show Session) about 90 minutes and he open the panel by "Education seems to be the last passenger of resistance" as JAMIL said;




each one of the presenters not talk more than ten minutes but they summarized the current situation of the online learning from different disciplines.





 now let me show you how is this session panel talk presented a new term for MOOCS the first time for me at least to hear about two different types of it; the cMOOCS and the xMOOCS; 1st presenter was Michael Jackel that talk about the gap of the 200,000 students that enrolled a MOOC course but only 8000 of them pass it.

 Vijay Thadai CEO -NIIT Limited & Co-Founder - NIIT University in INDIA talked about (The Flat World of Global Learning Delivery) Here is a photo of his university location with amazing view:

The third presenter: 




Akshay Saxena Co-Founder and President, Avanti Fellows from INDIA and his talk titled "Learning Better Together: Using Student Collaboration To Create The 21st Century Classroom".

The last presenter was Mohammad Al Ohaly Deputy Minister of Saudi Higher Education Ministry labeled "e-Learning Future in the Knowledge Society: A Saudi Arabia Prospective"
His informative show about current and future plans that his country working under the auspices of the custodian of the two holy mosques king Abdullah Al Saud with a solid strategic mission supported and bright vision forward applying the best tools of modern Education Technology cooperated with international models and tools by big government institutions and centers have a high budgets spent on Education development to face future changes year after the next.

before the end of the session; Prof. JAMIL share the audiences comments with four presenters and the most questions and comments focused on the new trends of MOOCS released currently in Saudi Arabia and Middle East showing the current society acceptance and the difficulties facing it like running costs and the effectiveness on our society.

Sometimes you find people you like and appreciate their efforts toward developing and planning their countries for showing a successful e-Learning platform but those people who are working hardly sometimes facing many difficulties specially in our Arab countries regardless big budgets and possibilities as a result of many issues left by a long time wrong concepts, traditions and thoughts; one of those appreciated e-Learning experienced and specialized people is Dr/ Abdullah AlMegren the General Manager of Saudi National Center for e-Learning and Distance Learning . During session 2 and before the end about 15 minutes ;I turned right by chance to see him set down beside me to greet him then started a dialogue with him about latest trends in e-Learning markets especially the disadvantages of MOOCS from our personal point of view and what will be the acceptance and design of next generation of different e-Learning forms and styles.
